Event – UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones
Time & Date – 7 pm, Sunday, March 21st, 2010
Venue – 1STBANK Center, Broomfield, Colorado
The Ultimate Fighting Championship airs live on national television for the first time in history, and will showcase some of its best for the occasion.
A well-rounded light heavyweight takes on an explosive young gun in the main event. Vera and Jones are both looking to bounce back from defeat, but only one will have what it takes to avoid two straight losses.
Next are two heavyweights that have never had to go the distance. Both dos Santos and Gonzaga have been, in the majority of circumstances, the ones to end things early, but pitting one against the other will prove just who is more capable of finishing his opponent.
Another duo from the heavyweight division rounds out the main card. Equally frustrated with their last performance, Kongo needs a win before he sinks another six feet and Buentello needs a win to prove himself worthy of the UFC.
Fourteen hungry athletes are already scheduled for the undercard that’s opening up this extravaganza, and only a fool would dismiss these prelims as paltry. The seven pairs of up-and-comers know how close they are to the top, and won’t spoil the chance they’ve spent years to obtain.

VERA VS. JONES
This light heavyweight bout pairs Vera with Jones for the first time. Both fighters were unsuccessful in their last trip to the Octagon. A decision ending a two-fight winning streak gave Vera his fourth career loss, and a disqualification ending a nine-fight winning streak gave Jones his very first. Eager to get back to winning, one will and one won’t. Vera: 11-4 (7-4 UFC). Jones: 9-1 (3-1 UFC).
32-year-old Brandon “The Truth” Vera began his MMA career in July of 2002 when he earned a round one technical knockout against Adam Rivera at EEFC 11: Excalibur Fighting. His most recent bout headlined UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera on November 14th of last year where a unanimous decision in favor of Randy left him defeated. Vera’s 11 wins include two knockouts, five technical knockouts, one submission, and three decisions, while one technical knockout and three decisions make up his 4 losses. Born in Virginia and fighting out of California, Vera participated regularly in high school, college, and armed forces wrestling, holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has a strong foundation in Muay Thai, trains at and feels privileged to be a part of both Team Lloyd Irvin and Alliance Training Center, names the Incredible Hulk as his hero, and was a member of the United States Air Force prior to becoming a professional martial artist.
22-year-old Jon “Bones” Jones began his MMA career in April of 2008 when a barrage of punches earned him a round one technical knockout against Brad Bernard at FFP: Untamed 20. His most recent bout took place at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on December 5th of last year where an illegal elbow in the first round forced his disqualification and rewarded Matt Hamill. Jones’ 9 wins include two knockouts, three technical knockouts, two submissions, and two decisions, while the Hamill DQ gives him his 1 loss. Born in and fighting out of New York, Jones participated regularly in high school and college wrestling, trains at and feels privileged to be a part of both Tristar Gym and Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts, names Anderson Silva, Fedor Emelianenko, and Muhammad Ali as his heroes, and earned an undergraduate degree with sights set on criminal justice and law enforcement prior to becoming a professional martial artist.
Will Vera’s four career losses have him primed for a quick recovery, or will Jones’ young ambition be what’s needed to slam the door on defeat?
DOS SANTOS VS. GONZAGA
Dos Santos faces Gonzaga for the first time in this heavyweight bout. Both fighters are coming off round one technical knockout wins, dos Santos having extended his streak to five in a row and Gonzaga having bounced back from what’s become an isolated loss. Dos Santos: 10-1 (4-0 UFC). Gonzaga: 11-4 (7-3 UFC).
25-year-old Junior “Cigano” dos Santos began his MMA career in July of 2006 when a rush of punches earned him a round one technical knockout against Jailson Silva Santos at Demo Fight 1. His most recent bout took place at UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva on January 2nd of this year where he added another round one technical knockout to his record with fists against Gilbert Yvel. Dos Santos’ 10 wins include seven technical knockouts and three submissions, while an armbar submission delivered by Joaquim Ferreira gives him his 1 loss. Born in and fighting out of Brazil, dos Santos took up jujitsu in 2005 and later added boxing to his schedule, has an 18-0 kickboxing record, holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, trains at and feels privileged to be a part of both Team Nogueira and Black House, and names Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira as his hero.
30-year-old Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga began his MMA career in April of 2003 when he used his fists to submit Cicero Costa in the first round at Brazilian Gladiators 2. His most recent bout took place at UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira on August 29th of last year where a torrent of punches earned him a round one technical knockout against Chris Tuchscherer. Gonzaga’s 11 wins include three knockouts, two technical knockouts, and six submissions, while technical knockouts caused by fists make up all 4 of his losses. He has fought in one title fight. Born in Brazil and fighting out of Massachusetts, Gonzaga took up jujitsu in 1994 and later added Muay Thai to his schedule, holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, trains at and feels privileged to be a part of Team Link, names Rickson Gracie as his hero, and worked in security for the hospitality industry prior to becoming a professional martial artist.
Neither one of these warriors has needed a judge’s opinion to determine a bout’s outcome. Dos Santos specializes in TKOs, Gonzaga’s métier is in submissions, and each boasts a knockout of the night. Will we see an early finish between two fighters that have known nothing else, or will their expertise force a career-first decision for both?
KONGO VS. BUENTELLO
This heavyweight bout sees Kongo take on Buentello for the first time. Kongo was left with a two-fight losing streak after being forced to submit in his last appearance, while Buentello let go of a two-fight winning streak in his return to the UFC after the scorecards favored his opponent. Kongo: 14-6-1 (7-4 UFC). Buentello: 27-11 (3-2 UFC).
34-year-old Cheick Kongo began his MMA career in June of 2001 when he utilized a heel hook to submit Andre Tete in the first round at Rings Holland: No Guts, No Glory. His most recent bout took place at UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez on December 12th of last year where a guillotine choke delivered by Frank Mir forced him to submit in the first round. Kongo’s 14 wins include three knockouts, six technical knockouts, two submissions, and three decisions; his 6 losses include one technical knockout, one submission, and four decisions; and he shares 1 draw with Michael Knaap. Born in and fighting out of Paris, Kongo took up kendo and karate when he entered martial arts at the age of five and added Muay Thai, kickboxing, and wrestling to his arsenal throughout his adolescence, has a 19-5 kickboxing record, holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, trains at and feels privileged to be a part of both Wolfslair MMA Academy and Quoniam Gym, names his mother and older brother as his heroes, spent two years in college, and worked as a commercial agent prior to becoming a professional martial artist.
36-year-old Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello began his MMA career in April of 1997 with two submission wins and a submission loss at Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation 4. His most recent bout took place at UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez on December 12th of last year where a majority decision in favor of Stefan Struve left him defeated. Buentello’s 27 wins include eight knockouts, nine technical knockouts, nine submissions, and one decision, while one knockout, one technical knockout, seven submissions, and two decisions make up his 11 losses. He has fought in two title fights. Born in Texas and fighting out of California, Buentello took up taekwondo when he entered martial arts as a youth, excels in kickboxing and striking and is quickly becoming a dangerous grappler, trains at and feels privileged to be a part of Grudge Training Center, names his mom as his hero and is grateful for her strength and support, enjoyed playing football and baseball regularly in high school, and worked as a contractor prior to becoming a professional martial artist.
Will Kongo break out of the red before two in a row becomes three, or will Buentello redeem himself after a disappointing return to the world’s leading MMA promotion?
The triple-decker main card will be set off by more than twice as many preliminary bouts, and the skill in these openers could very well leave you wondering who’s who.
