Event – UFC 109: Relentless

Time & Date – 7 pm, Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Venue – Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada

In a showcase of longevity, the world’s leading mixed martial arts promotion presents a fight card filled with more resilience than what all of us spectators combined could hope to have.

Two UFC Hall of Fame inductees headline the event in a bout that’s unrivaled in age. Not only is the matchup more than a decade in the making, the two stalwart warriors it features boast an incredible 91 years between them. This light heavyweight contest also marks the first time two hall of famers are set in opposition.

Next on the card, a pair of middleweights riding winning streaks and each in search of a title opportunity. A victory means moving one step forward, a defeat ten steps back, and both fighters are ready and willing to knock each other off the precipitous championship ledge.

Then there’s a disappointed welterweight looking to edge back into challenger status up against a fellow welterweight who’s just as keen to stay afloat, a middleweight submission specialist as determined as another to bounce back from defeat, and two welterweights equally eager to prevent a crash from turning into all-out collapse.

The amount of endurance packed into this lineup makes “Relentless” a rather suitable title, and these five fights are just the main card! Six other fights are set to start things off, and there’s plenty of ambitious skill on 109’s undercard.

Here’s a closer look at 109’s card.

COUTURE VS. COLEMAN

It’s been more than eleven years since Couture’s injury forced a delay, but these two beasts, together with a mountain of fans, are getting what they’ve been waiting for. Both Couture and Coleman ended a two-fight losing streak the last time they ventured into the Octagon, and each fighter managed to get out of the red with a close decision victory.

46-year-old Randy “The Natural” Couture began his MMA career in May of 1997 when he forced Tony Halme to submit in the first round at UFC 13: The Ultimate Force. His most recent bout headlined UFC 105 on November 14th of last year where he defeated Brandon Vera via unanimous decision. Couture’s 17 wins include seven technical knockouts, two submissions, and eight decisions, while two knockouts, three technical knockouts, four submissions, and one decision make up his 10 losses. He has attained six titles, and defended three times. Born in Washington and fighting out of the Xtreme Couture camp in Nevada, Couture participated regularly in high school, armed forces, and college wrestling before dedicating himself to mixed martial arts, holds a Pan American gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling, values the commitment and self-sacrifice all professional athletes endure, names Kenny Monday as his wrestling hero and skiers as his childhood heroes, dreamt of skiing at the Olympic level as a youth, and has an undergraduate degree in German.

45-year-old Mark “The Hammer” Coleman began his MMA career in July of 1996 when he forced Moti Horenstein to submit in the first round at UFC 10: The Tournament. His most recent bout took place at UFC 100: Lesnar vs. Mir II on July 11th of last year where he defeated Stephan Bonnar via unanimous decision. Coleman’s 16 wins include four technical knockouts, eight submissions, and four decisions, while two knockouts, one technical knockout, four submissions, and two decisions make up his 9 losses. He has attained one title. Born in Ohio and fighting out of the Hammer House camp, Coleman took up wrestling when he was a teenager and participated regularly at the college level before dedicating himself to mixed martial arts, became MMA’s ground-and-pound pioneer after employing the strategy successfully at UFC 10, names his mother, father, and two daughters as his heroes, has an undergraduate degree in education, and worked as an assistant wrestling coach with Olympic aspirations prior to setting out on his MMA journey.

Other than an amateur wrestling match held in 1989 and narrowly won by Coleman, this light heavyweight bout will be the first time these two legends meet for battle. Which one will walk out the winner?

MARQUARDT VS. SONNEN

This middleweight bout pairs Marquardt with Sonnen for the first time. Marquardt most recently banked knockout of the night honors and extended his winning streak to three fights, while Sonnen most recently won by decision and extended his winning streak to two fights.

30-year-old Nate “The Great” Marquardt began his MMA career in April of 1999 when he forced Mike Lee to submit in the second round at WVF: Durango. His most recent bout took place at UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira on August 29th of last year where he put Demian Maia to sleep in the first round. Marquardt’s 29 wins include four knockouts, three technical knockouts, fifteen submissions, and seven decisions; his 8 losses include one technical knockout, two submissions, and five decisions; and he shares 2 draws. Marquardt has attained three titles, and defended four times. Born in Wyoming and fighting out of Colorado, Marquardt took up several disciplines when he entered mixed martial arts at the age of fifteen, currently trains with Jackson’s Submission Fighting and holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, names Jesus Christ as his hero, and worked as a desk clerk for a communications company prior to becoming a professional martial artist.

32-year-old Chael Sonnen began his MMA career in March of 2002 when he defeated Jason Miller via unanimous decision at HFP 1: Rumble on the Reservation. His most recent bout took place at UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun on October 24th of last year where he added another unanimous decision to his record by defeating Yushin Okami. Sonnen’s 23 wins include one knockout, six technical knockouts, three submissions, and thirteen decisions; his 10 losses include two technical knockouts, seven submissions, and one decision; and he shares 1 draw with Akihiro Gono. Born in and fighting out of Oregon, Sonnen participated regularly in college wrestling and currently trains with Team Quest, names Pope John Paul II as his hero, has an undergraduate degree in sociology, and juggles his life as a professional fighter with a career in real estate and another in public service.

Every fight matters when the ultimate goal is to wear a UFC belt. Will Marquardt win his fourth in a row to stay on track and perhaps earn another knockout of the night, or will Sonnen match his rival’s current winning streak and simultaneously surpass him in rank?

SWICK VS. THIAGO

Swick faces Thiago for the first time in this welterweight bout. Swick’s last visit to the Octagon resulted in a decision that ended his four-fight winning streak and also scratched him off the list of eligible punching bags for Georges St-Pierre, while Thiago’s last visit to the Octagon resulted in a decision that stopped him from losing two in a row.

30-year-old Mike “Quick” Swick began his MMA career in November of 1998 when he forced Victor Bell to submit in the first round at Power Ring Warriors. His most recent bout took place at UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera on November 14th of last year where a unanimous decision for Dan Hardy left him defeated. Swick’s 14 wins include three knockouts, four technical knockouts, three submissions, and four decisions, while one knockout and two decisions make up his 3 losses. Born in Texas and fighting out of California, Swick took up taekwondo when he entered martial arts at the age of eight, added several disciplines to his arsenal over time and currently trains with American Kickboxing Academy, has an endless list of heroes and finds inspiration in many things, thanks his mom for letting him learn how to “kick butt like the Karate Kid,” has worked in sales and hospitality, and was the owner of a pressure washing company prior to becoming a professional martial artist.

29-year-old Paulo Thiago began his MMA career in July of 2005 when he forced Ricardo Petrucio to submit in the third round at Storm Samurai 8. His most recent bout took place at UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin II on November 21st of last year where he defeated Jacob Volkmann via unanimous decision. Thiago’s 12 wins include two technical knockouts, seven submissions, and three decisions, while a unanimous decision in favor of Jon Fitch gives him his 1 loss. Born in and fighting out of Brazil, Thiago took up judo when he entered martial arts at the age of five, currently trains with Constrictor Team and holds a black belt in judo and another in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, was inspired by his older brother from the beginning, and juggles his life as a professional fighter with a law enforcement career in special operations.

Will Swick find a way to refocus himself so that he’s able to start the climb back to title contention, or will Thiago better his UFC record to 3-1 and be the one to buoy?

MAIA VS. MILLER

Maia is pitted against Miller for the first time in this middleweight bout. Maia’s most recent test saw a knockout deliver his first career loss and end his eleven-fight winning streak, while Miller’s most recent test saw a decision deliver his second career loss and end his nine-fight winning streak.

32-year-old Demian Maia began his MMA career in September of 2001 when he earned a round one technical knockout against Raul Sosa at Tormenta en el Ring. His most recent bout took place at UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira on August 29th of last year where Nate Marquardt put him to sleep in the first round. Maia’s 11 wins include two technical knockouts, eight submissions, and one decision, while the Marquardt knockout gives him his 1 loss. Born in and fighting out of Brazil, Maia took up judo when he entered martial arts as a child and was introduced to other disciplines during his adolescence, currently trains with Wand Fight Team and holds a black belt in BJJ, names Rickson Gracie as his hero, has an undergraduate degree in journalism, and taught Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before concentrating on his own career.

28-year-old Dan Miller began his MMA career in November of 2005 when he forced Tenyeh Dixon to submit in the first round at Reality Fighting 10. His most recent bout took place at UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida on May 23rd of last year where a unanimous decision for Chael Sonnen left him defeated. Miller’s 11 wins include one technical knockout, seven submissions, and three decisions; his 2 losses have both been decisions; and he shares 1 no contest with Mike Geurin. Miller has attained two titles, and defended once. Born in and fighting out of New Jersey, Miller participated regularly in high school wrestling, dedicated himself to mixed martial arts alongside his brother Jim in 2005, currently trains with AMA Fight Club and holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and worked in construction prior to becoming a professional martial artist.

No one likes to lose two in a row, but one of these submission specialists will do just that. Will Maia be the one to avoid an extended slump, or will Miller?

SERRA VS. TRIGG

This welterweight bout sees Serra face Trigg for the first time. A decision saw Serra swallow his second straight loss with a fight of the night chaser in his last appearance, while a technical knockout saw Trigg say goodbye to a four-fight winning streak in his last appearance.

35-year-old Matt “The Terror” Serra began his MMA career in August of 1999 when he forced Graham Lewis to submit in the first round at Vengeance at the Vanderbilt 6. His most recent bout took place at UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida on May 23rd of last year where a unanimous decision in favor of Matt Hughes left him defeated. Serra’s 9 wins include one technical knockout, four submissions, and four decisions, while one knockout, one technical knockout, and four decisions make up his 6 losses. Serra has attained one title. Born in New York and fighting out of the Serra Jiu-Jitsu camp, Serra entered martial arts at an early age following in the footsteps of his father, holds a black belt in BJJ, names his father as his hero, and enjoyed teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before concentrating on his own career.

37-year-old Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg began his MMA career in October of 1997 when he put Ali Elias to sleep in the first round at Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation 7. His most recent bout took place at UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort on September 19th of last year where he suffered a round one technical knockout against Josh Koscheck. Trigg’s 19 wins include one knockout, seven technical knockouts, six submissions, and five decisions, while one knockout, two technical knockouts, and four submissions make up his 7 losses. Trigg has attained one title. Born in New York and fighting out of Nevada, Trigg took up wrestling when he entered martial arts at the age of twelve and participated regularly at the college level, currently trains with Xtreme Couture and holds a black belt in judo, names Gandhi and Malcolm X as his heroes, has an undergraduate degree in public affairs and administration, and worked as a wrestling coach before concentrating on his own career.

Will Serra turn the tide in his favor and perhaps earn fight of the night honors next to a win this time around, or will Trigg bounce back from an isolated loss and sink his foe another six feet?
