Here’s a closer look at the main event.
EVANS VS. SILVA
Headlining 108, Evans and Silva meet for the first time in this light heavyweight grudge match. Not particularly impressed by Silva’s degree of humility after knocking out teammate Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine at UFC 102, Evans is looking to teach him some manners and take the first step in reclaiming his title at the same time. Silva, on the other hand, plans on justifying his pride by adding a 12th knockout win to his 14-1 record.
30-year-old Rashad “Suga” Evans began his MMA career in April of 2004 when he forced Dennis Reed into submission at Dangerzone: Cage Fighting. His most recent bout headlined UFC 98 on May 23rd of this year where he was put to sleep by Lyoto Machida in round two. Evans’ 13 wins include 3 knockouts, 2 technical knockouts, 2 submissions, and 6 decisions; Machida’s knockout win gives him his 1 loss; and he shares 1 draw with Tito Ortiz. Evans has attained one title. Born in New York and fighting out of New Mexico, Evans participated regularly in high school and college wrestling and now trains with Jackson’s Submission Fighting, names his mom as his hero, and has an undergraduate degree in psychology.
27-year-old Thiago Silva began his MMA career in September of 2005 when he earned a technical knockout win against Rubens Xavier at Predador FC 1. His most recent bout took place at UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira on August 29th of this year where he added another technical knockout win to his record in the match against Keith Jardine. Silva’s 14 wins include 2 knockouts, 9 technical knockouts, 2 submissions, and 1 decision, while his 1 loss is, like Evans’, due to Machida’s knockout skills. Born in and fighting out of Brazil, Silva trains with American Top Team, holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, names Wanderlei Silva as his hero, and has his sights set on an early title opportunity in the UFC.
Will Evans demonstrate superiority in sportsmanship and skill, or will Silva prove nearer light heavyweight dominance?
Also on the main card:
LAUZON VS. STOUT
This lightweight bout pairs Lauzon and Stout for the first time. Eager to reach his first UFC title fight, Lauzon has won eight of his last nine. Also working toward a first-time title opportunity, Stout has won five of his last eight.
25-year-old Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon began his MMA career in February of 2004 when he forced David Gilrein into submission at Mass Destruction 15. His most recent bout headlined UFC Fight Night 17 on February 7th of this year where he added another submission win to his record by defeating Jeremy Stephens. Lauzon’s 18 wins include 2 knockouts, 2 technical knockouts, and 14 submissions, while his 4 losses include 2 technical knockouts and 2 submissions. Born in and fighting out of Massachusetts, Lauzon entered martial arts in high school and now trains with Lauzon MMA, holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, names his dad as his hero, and has an undergraduate degree in computer science.
25-year-old Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout began his MMA career in June of 2003 when he was forced into submission by Jay Estrada at Total Martial Arts Challenge. His most recent bout took place at UFC 97: Redemption on April 18th of this year where he defeated Matt Wiman via decision. Stout’s 14 wins include 2 knockouts, 6 technical knockouts, 1 submission, and 5 decisions; his 5 losses include 2 submissions and 3 decisions; and he shares 1 draw with Joey Clark. Born in and fighting out of Ontario, Stout took up karate and kickboxing when he entered martial arts as a boy and now trains with Team Tompkins, excels in striking, names Shawn Tompkins as his hero, and is studying paramedicine.
Will Lauzon extend his two-win streak to three, or will Stout triumph for two straight?
Here are two in the works:
DALEY VS. HAZELETT
Daley and Hazelett are matched up for the first time in this welterweight bout. Daley is looking forward to his second fight in the UFC after dominating his first in September, while Hazelett, who’s won five of seven, is eager for his eighth.
26-year-old Paul “Semtex” Daley began his MMA career in June of 2003 when he earned a technical knockout win against John Connelly at Extreme Brawl 3. His most recent bout took place at UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort on September 19th of this year where he added another technical knockout win to his record by defeating Martin Kampmann. Daley has attained three titles. His 22 wins include 6 knockouts, 11 technical knockouts, 1 submission, and 4 decisions; his 8 losses include 1 technical knockout, 5 submissions, and 2 decisions; and he shares 2 draws. Born in and fighting out of England, Daley took up karate when he entered martial arts at the age of seven and now trains with Team Rough House, excels in striking, admires many personal heroes, and has a diploma in public services.
23-year-old Dustin “McLovin” Hazelett began his MMA career in October of 2004 when he forced Justin Hons into submission at KOTC: Dayton. His most recent bout took place at UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar on November 15th of last year where he added another submission win to his record by defeating Tamdan McCrory. Hazelett’s 12 wins include 1 knockout, 9 submissions, and 2 decisions, while his 4 losses include 2 technical knockouts, 1 submission, and 1 decision. Born in Kentucky and fighting out of Ohio, Hazelett entered martial arts in high school and now trains with Team Jorge Gurgel, holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, names his parents and Gurgel as his heroes, and is studying management.
Will Daley painlessly continue undefeated in his new promotion, or will Hazelett remind him that there are no easy fights in the UFC?
SHERK VS. MILLER
Sherk and Miller meet for the first time in this lightweight bout. Sherk is making his way back to the top of the division with sights set on a second title, while Miller is committed to reaching his first title fight since joining the UFC.
36-year-old Sean “Muscle Shark” Sherk began his MMA career in June of 1999 when he defeated Roscoe Ostyn via decision at Dangerzone: Mahnomen. His most recent bout took place at UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida on May 23rd of this year where he was defeated by Frankie Edgar via decision. Sherk has attained one title. His 33 wins include 8 technical knockouts, 13 submissions, and 12 decisions; his 4 losses include 2 technical knockouts and 2 decisions; and he shares 1 draw with Kiuma Kunioku. Born in and fighting out of Minnesota, Sherk took up wrestling when he entered martial arts at the age of seven and now trains with the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy under Greg Nelson, excels in grappling, and names his older brother as his childhood hero.
26-year-old Jim Miller began his MMA career in November of 2005 when he defeated Eddie Fyvie via decision at Reality Fighting 10. His most recent bout took place at UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort on September 19th of this year where he earned a technical knockout win against Steve Lopez. Miller has attained two titles, and defended once. His 15 wins include 2 technical knockouts, 9 submissions, and 4 decisions, while his 2 losses have both been decisions. Born in and fighting out of New Jersey, Miller participated regularly in high school and college wrestling and now trains with the AMA Fight Club, holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and names his parents and his siblings as his heroes.
Will Sherk start a new string of victories, or will Miller win his third in a row?
Five fights are already official for UFC 108’s preliminary card: one lightweight, one welterweight, one middleweight, one light heavyweight, and one heavyweight.
LIGHTWEIGHT
Cole ‘Magrinho’ Miller vs. Dan ‘The Upgrade’ Lauzon
WELTERWEIGHT
Mike ‘Quicksand’ Pyle vs. Jake Ellenberger
MIDDLEWEIGHT
Mark ‘The Filipino Wrecking Machine’ Munoz vs. Ryan Jensen
LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT
Vladimir ‘The Janitor’ Matyushenko vs. Steve ‘Robot’ Cantwell
HEAVYWEIGHT
Junior ‘Cigano’ dos Santos vs. Gilbert ‘The Hurricane’ Yvel
Plus, an additional lightweight bout is expected between Rafaello ‘Tractor’ Oliveira and Sean “Muscle Shark” Sherk’s replacement. Sherk shifted to fight Miller on the main card after an unspecified injury forced Tyson Griffin to withdraw.
Martin ‘The Hitman’ Kampmann is also awaiting a new challenger. Original opponent Rory Markham had to drop the welterweight bout after severely pulling his Achilles tendon. Jacob “Christmas” Volkmann is likely to fill the void.
