Event – MLS Cup 2009: Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Real Salt Lake
Time & Date – 5:30 pm, Sunday, November 22nd, 2009
Venue – Qwest Field, Seattle, Washington
The LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake met twice in the regular season. Real Salt Lake hosted a 2-2 tie on May 6th, and then upset the Galaxy on June 13th with a 2-0 away win to take the series.
Playing just as well in the postseason, underdog RSL defeated the Columbus Crew 4-2 in aggregate and the Chicago Fire 5-4 in penalty kicks to take home the Eastern Conference Championship and advance to the Final.
Los Angeles has won the West and reached the Final after a three-year playoff drought. The Galaxy defeated Chivas USA 3-2 in aggregate and the Houston Dynamo 2-0 in the conference finals.
Out of 13 seasons, the Galaxy has advanced to the playoffs ten times. LA won the Cup in 2002 and 2005, and earned the Supporters’ Shield in 1998 and 2002.
Out of 4 seasons, Real Salt Lake advanced to the postseason for the first time last year. RSL nearly reached the Final, but was stopped 1-0 by New York in the Western Conference Championship game.

LOS ANGELES GALAXY
Finishing at the top of the Western Conference and runner-up in the league with 48 points in 30 games played, the Galaxy’s regular season record came to 12 wins, 6 losses, and 12 ties and a goals for/against ratio of 36-31. LA’s record at home ended as 7-4-4 and 18-17, while its record away ended as 5-2-8 and 18-14. After last year’s Golden Boot win with 20 goals and 9 assists in 25 games played, forward Landon Donovan continues an excellent tenure with 12 goals and 6 assists in the same amount played making him this year’s fourth-best scorer in the league.
REAL SALT LAKE
Finishing 5th in the Western Conference and 8th in the league with 40 points in 30 games played, RSL’s regular season record came to 11 wins, 12 losses, and 7 ties and a goals for/against ratio of 43-35. Real Salt Lake’s record at home ended as 9-1-5 and 34-11, while its record away ended as 2-11-2 and 9-24. Forward Robbie Findley finished the regular season fifth in line for the Golden Boot with 12 goals and 4 assists in 27 games played.
Will Los Angeles earn its third Cup after missing the playoffs for the last three years, or will Real Salt Lake defy the odds and win its first league title in franchise history?
Last year the Galaxy landed 6th in its conference and 13th in the league with 33 points in 30 games played and an 8-13-9 and 55-62 record.
Real Salt Lake finished 2008 3rd in its conference and 7th in the league with 40 points in 30 games played and a 10-10-10 and 40-39 record. RSL advanced to last season’s conference finals after defeating Chivas USA 3-2 in aggregate, but couldn’t get past the New York Red Bulls in the one-goal 2008 Western Conference Final.
