The first time that Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes locked horns was at UFC 142 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fight produced one of the most memorable finishes in the long and storied history of the UFC.

Aldo was coming off of two underwhelming performances against Kenny Florian and Mark Hominick and was looking to re-establish his dominance in the division.

At the end of the first round, Aldo knocked Mendes out with a vicious knee and then proceeded to embark on one of the most memorable celebrations in the history of the UFC:

Now, nearly three years after Aldo took out Mendes, the two fighters are set to square off once again.

Jose Aldo will again be fighting in front of his home fans in Brazil, and again Jose Aldo will be the favourite.

Having said that, however, the bloom seems to be coming off of the Jose Aldo rose a bit, as he has looked mortal in his last couple of fights. Is the long-time Featherweight champion nearing the end of his reign? Perhaps, but the better question might be - is Chad Mendes the man to end that reign?

Let's look at the odds for this Sunday's UFC 179 main event:

Jose Aldo, 1.44
Chad Mendes, 2.87

So, according to these odds, a successful $100 wager on Aldo would yield a total profit of $44, while a successful $100 bet on Mendes would return $187.

Again - Aldo is the favourite, though the odds are narrower than what you would see for a typical Aldo fight.

Mendes is currently riding a five fight winning streak and this is one of the reasons why the odds are fairly tight. Mendes has looked very, very good recently, finishing four of his last five fights via knockout. Aldo, on the other hand, hasn't been able to notch a clean finish since he fought Mendes in 2012.

What do you think of this fight - will Aldo retain or will we have a new Featherweight champion?
