Men’s Skeleton and Women’s Skeleton are contested at the Winter Olympic Games. Both events have four heats each, and medals are awarded based on the lowest combined time.

The last Winter Olympics awarded Maya Pedersen-Bieri of Switzerland gold, Shelley Rudman of Great Britain silver, and Mellisa Hollingsworth-Richards of Canada bronze for the Women’s Skeleton competition.

Turin 2006 awarded Duff Gibson of Canada gold, Jeff Pain of Canada silver, and Gregor Stähli of Switzerland bronze for the Men’s Skeleton competition.

Only 18 Olympic medals have been awarded in the sport of skeleton. The United States has the most and also ranks highest with 3 gold and 3 silver. Canada comes in second with 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. Switzerland is third with 1 gold and 2 bronze, while Italy sits fourth with 1 gold. Great Britain places fifth with 1 silver and 3 bronze, and Austria rounds things out sixth with 1 silver.

The Whistler Sliding Centre officially opened in the fall of 2008. It currently has a track speed record of 153.98 km/h.

The sled used in skeleton was originally constructed entirely out of metal, but is now a combination of metal and fiberglass. The barebones design gave the sport its name and was created by British L.P. Child in 1892.

Men’s Skeleton made its Olympic debut at St. Moritz 1928 and its second appearance at St. Moritz 1948. 52 years would pass before skeleton’s return at Salt Lake 2002, this time with both a men’s and a women’s competition. Skeleton will have 82 years of Olympic experience and development behind it at the 2010 Winter Games.
