Event – 2010 Winter Games Curling
Date – Sessions held between February 16th and 27th, 2010
Venue – Vancouver Olympic Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia
Enjoyed for more than 500 years, the sport of curling is rooted in Scotland. In the first years of the game when control of the rock was underdeveloped, luck determined winners more often than skill and strategy, but that didn’t stop enthusiasts from counting down to the coldest time of year. The nearing of winter brought its usual gloom, but it also brought frozen lochs and ponds to play on. Crowds of people would gather to partake in a game, either as players or as cheerers, and the popularity of curling allowed its development to bloom.
The 1600s saw rocks grow handles and brooms take speed and direction personally, while popularity steadily grew well into the 18th century. Clubs began to form in the 1800s, and the Grand (later renamed Royal) Caledonian Curling Club was the first to set out official rules. Refrigeration in the 20th century allowed expansion all around the world, and specially designed shoes giving both traction and a means for slide delivery has made concentrating on the house (and the target) easier than ever for curling professionals.
With expert skips calling the shots, last-to-throw thirds communicating the calls, and robust sweepers knowing just how to maneuver the nearly 20-kg rocks, the ten ends of each game are filled with action. Two teams take turns throwing for a total of sixteen throws per end, and all eight players have two opportunities each to bring the house in their team’s favour. Five centuries of development has turned a game of luck into “chess on ice,” and athletes must be tiptop physically and mentally if they hope to win an Olympic medal.

Curling made its Olympic debut at the very first Winter Games, Chamonix 1924. It next appeared as a demonstration sport at Lake Placid 1932. More than half a century would go by before curling would make another appearance, this time at Calgary 1988, and again as a demonstration sport. It was demonstrated once more at Albertville 1992, and then finally became an official sport at Nagano 1998. This sport of skill will have 86 years of consistent Olympic experience and development behind it at the 2010 Winter Games.
