Event – 2010 Winter Games Cross-Country Skiing

Date – Sessions held between February 15th and 28th, 2010

Venue – Whistler Blackcomb, Whistler, British Columbia

The sport of skiing came to be long before paved streets and snowplows existed, and the first form it took was the style of cross-country. Estimated to be at least 6,000 years old, paintings found in Russia play witness to slender slats carrying human beings over snow-covered paths. Survival in colder climates required hunting, gathering firewood, and maintaining contact with sparse hamlets year-round. Without cross-country skiing, these ancestors of ours may not have survived.

Cross-country skiing was standard for Sweden’s army by 1500, Norway’s army began competitions in 1767, and 1843 saw it officially become a sport with the first civilian-organized contest. The Olympics have included men’s events in cross-country skiing since the beginning of the Winter Games at Chamonix 1924, and women’s events were added at Oslo 1952.

Six kinds of cross-country skiing events take place at the Winter Games: Individual Start, Mass Start, Pursuit, Individual Sprint, Team Sprint, and Relay.

Individual Start sees an athlete start every thirty seconds. All athletes race against the clock, and the fastest time wins. Free technique and classic technique in Individual Start alternate with each Olympics. Since classic technique was used in Individual Start at the last Winter Games, free technique will be used in Individual Start at Vancouver 2010.

Mass Start sees all athletes start together. They race against each other, and the first athlete across the finish line wins. Free technique and classic technique in Mass Start alternate with each Olympics. Since free technique was used in Mass Start at the last Winter Games, classic technique will be used in Mass Start at Vancouver 2010.

Pursuit sees all athletes start together and race against each other. At the midway point in the race, athletes must switch equipment to facilitate a change between classic technique and free technique. The first athlete across the finish line wins.

Individual Sprint consists of five rounds in total. Athletes start at intervals, race against the clock, and the faster ones advance until winners are determined. Free technique and classic technique in Individual Sprint alternate with each Olympics. Since free technique was used in Individual Sprint at the last Winter Games, classic technique will be used in Individual Sprint at Vancouver 2010.

Team Sprint consists of three rounds in total. Teams of two race six laps with teammates racing one lap at a time. All teams start together, race against each other, and the faster ones advance until winners are determined. Free technique and classic technique in Team Sprint alternate with each Olympics. Since classic technique was used in Team Sprint at the last Winter Games, free technique will be used in Team Sprint at Vancouver 2010.

Relay sees teams of four race two legs of classic technique directly followed by two legs of free technique. Similar to Team Sprint, teammates race in rotation. All teams start together and race against each other. The first team across the finish line wins.
