Whether you call it bobsleighing, bobsledding, or bobsledging, I think you’ll agree, this gripping winter sport wasn’t dreamt up by the faint of heart.
Tired of risking their lives one by one, fearless soon-to-be bobsledders decided to team up at the end of the 19th century. Two simple sleds were attached to form a longer toboggan, and it didn’t take the athletes long to perfect riding down treacherous tracks as a unit.
Each run involves one pilot and one brakeman, and two extra pushers if it’s a four-person crew. Sledders start upright on the ice wearing heavy-duty helmets, snug suits, and spiked shoes. A 50-metre push start sees the athletes “bob” back and forth as they get the sled going, and then, interfering as little as possible with their hard-earned momentum, the teammates load into their seated positions ready for the speedy descent.
Bobsleds regularly reach speeds of more than 130 kilometres per hour, and a gravitational
force of 5 G in the twists and turns of the frozen labyrinth is not uncommon. A small lip at the top of the track on both sides is designed to prevent sleds from flying out. The safety of the riders is a group effort, but mostly placed in the hands of the pilot and, at the end of the run, the brakeman.
Following as smooth a trajectory as possible is the team’s number one priority. It’s an incredible race against time as these Olympians shoot down 150 vertical metres during their nearly 1,500-metre route. With only hundredths of a second separating medal winners, perfection in precision is what it takes to win at this world-class level.
